Project 1 Proposal: One Minute Noise In NYC

1. Research Question: “Where are the noisiest place in New York City – specifically, what ZIP codes in the five boroughs of New York City generated the most noise complaints?”

2. Audience: Home owners and renters looking to understand the noise levels of specific neighborhoods, using ZIP codes as a granular stand-in for neighborhoods.

3. Data: 311 Service Requests from 2017 to the present, via NYC Open Data.

4. Visualization: Generate a series of 60 choropleth maps (geographic heat maps) representing the total quantity of 311 noise complaints by ZIP code, with each map displaying density by month. An animation can then be created showing a timelapse of noise “flashes” by ZIP code with each month’s total appearing for one second, elapsing January 2017 to December 2022 in 60 seconds.
